An open letter to Premier Palaszcuk from ARAMA
I write to you on behalf of Queensland accommodation providers who desperately need an accelerated easing of restrictions and are ready to open their doors to tourism.
While we commend your government’s action on flattening the curve, our members need immediate action to resuscitate their businesses which are the lifeblood of our state’s tourism economy.
We understand community safety comes first, but the current step-down approach to easing of restrictions is out of touch with the accommodation industry where many operators are facing closure.
We call on Queensland to fall in line with our New South Wales and Victorian counterparts in allowing leisure travellers to accommodate overnight without any travel restrictions from June 1.
As a tourism leader, Queensland must back its Queensland businesses.
Ready to re-open to leisure travellers
In a pulse survey last week, an overwhelming majority (96.8 per cent) of our members said they were desperate for State Government to accelerate the easing of restrictions.
10 per cent of respondents expected that their accommodation business would only sustain the current environment for up for 4 weeks with a further 19% indicating they would have to shut up shop or walk away in 8 weeks’ time.
We are seeking immediate action on the current step-down approach:
Ready for the new normal
A further boost for Queensland accommodation providers will come when our borders reopen to interstate guests.
For an industry dependent on it, monthly border policy reviews should be accelerated to fortnightly providing greater opportunity for reopening.
The accommodation industry is ready for a COVID-safe world – our reputation depends on it.
We have responded to change, reinvented our businesses and we are ready to welcome guests. Remove the barriers to our success and let’s get Queensland’s tourism industry moving again.
